Cherry Jello Trifle

(this dessert looks great in a trifle bowl)
1 can (21 oz.) cherry pie filling
1-1/2 c. boiling water
1 pkg. (8-serving size) cherry jello
1-1/2 c. cold water
1 angel food cake, cubed
3 c. cold milk
2 pkgs. (4-serving size) instant vanilla pudding
1 tub (8 oz.) cool whip
Reserve 1/3 c. pie filling. In large bowl, dissolve jello in boiling water, stirring 2 minutes until completely dissolved. Add remaining pie filling. Refrigerate for about 45 minutes or until the consistency of unbeaten egg whites.
Place cubed cake in serving bowl. Pour jello mixture over cake. Refrigerate about 45 minutes until firm but not set.
Combine both boxes of pudding with milk. Whisk for 2 minutes. Gently stir in 2 c. cool whip. Spoon over gelatin mixture. Refrigerate 2 hours or until set. Top with remaining cool whip. Garnish center of cool whip with reserved pie filling.
You can "lighten" this recipe by using lite pie filling, sugar-free jello and pudding, fat free milk and lite cool whip.
